Drumming Game and Play-Along – I Can Drum at Home

Hi, I'm Suzanne Fassett Wright and I am here
with Chautauqua Institution, and we are doing these "I Can Drum at Home" videos
for you to enjoy and drum along, as many of you have drummed with us in class. This
video is growing on Brian's video – Brian Kushmaul's video – on steady beat. Brian
taught you and showed you how to keep a steady beat on your drums. A nice, even, steady beat. It doesn't change, always stays the same. What you've
learned about steady beat, we can use that steady beat to write a piece of
music . We are going to write a 32-beat piece of music that has little sections
of eight counts each and in this piece of music, we're going to use different
ways to hit the drum – different hands to hit the drum – to create a 32-beat phrase to
go along with a song that we're going to play later for you.

So there are four
counts – four sets of eight counts. Here's the first set of eight counts. We're
going to drum a steady beat with both hands for eight counts. Here's how it
goes. ๐Ÿฅ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ๐Ÿฅ Let's do that together. Take both hands and hit eight counts, right with me.
Here we go. Ready, go ๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿฅ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ๐Ÿฅ Pause the video and practice that
on your own if you need to. The next part – our second eight counts – you're going to
use one hand. I'm using my left hand but to you, it may look like my right because
you're facing me. I'm going to use my left hand to hit eight times just like
this: ✋๐Ÿฅ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ๐Ÿฅ Do that with me – here we go. Ready, go ✋๐Ÿฅ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ๐Ÿฅ Okay that was the second part. You can pause the video and practice that on
your own if you like, or we can practice parts one with both hands and parts two
with just our left hand together.

Let's do that now. I'll count you in,

where you're watching, but this is my right hand. I'm going to use that to hit
eight times. It'll sound and look just like this: ✋๐Ÿฅ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ๐Ÿฅ Let's do that together – here we go: Ready, go ✋๐Ÿฅ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ๐Ÿฅ If you need to, pause the video and
practice just your right hand by itself. We can now practice the first three
parts all together. Hands together – left hand – right hand – each for eight counts.

The last part this is the most fun part. It looks a lot like the first part but
our eighth count's a little different. Watch me and listen – here is

Nick is joining me because we're going to play some music that we can do that
32 count, eight beat rhythm pattern that we just learned earlier in the video.
We're going to be using songs that we used actually in our drumming class.

We
used the Beatles "Ob-La-di, Ob-La-da" for this particular game in the classroom
and we thought that we would do our version of it.
NIck and I are gonna sing, he's gonna play guitar, I'm gonna drum and we encourage
you to join us with the 32 count 8 beat drum game. I will count you in – I'll say "1
2 ready go," and we'll start doing exactly what we did just before.
