How To Play West African Drums : Playing Slap Sounds on Djembe African Drums

MAN: The last sound of the three for the djembe
is called the slap. This is the highest pitched sound. It's not the loudest sound. The tone
of the slap should both be made with even energy, but the slap is a higher pitch and
it's made by simply opening your fingers just a little bit. You don't want to be to have
your hand tensed, you want your hand relaxed but for the tone, your fingers are together,
for the slap, your fingers are just apart a little bit and it sounds like this.

Again,
you want to bring your hand off the drum, otherwise, it sounds like this. You can't
play fast that way and also, you want the drum to ring out a little bit. The slap.
And that is made–that makes 1/3 of the music. You got slap, tone, bass, so it's very important.
But remember, that your hands must lift off the drum..
