How To Play Sting’s “7 Days” Drum Beat – Drum Lesson (Drumeo)

(funky rock music) – Hello, guys. Welcome back. This is Gabor "Gabs" Dornyei
here at the Drumeo studios. Today I'm going to
teach you a groove that is recorded by
everybody's favorite, the great Vinnie Colaiuta, on a Sting number
called "7 Days." Let's get to the groove. So the first application will
be the top line of the chart that you can see on the
bottom of the screen. This is probably
the most simple way you can play a five four groove.

Okay? So "Seven Days,"
the song is in five four. Now, you're going to play
quarter note to the high hat, beat one on the bass drum,
and beat four on the snare. Just like this. One,
two, three, four five. One, two, three,
four, five. One. (mumbles)
(drumming) In the second line
of the notation, you find the first
little bit tricky thing, that we're going to accent every second note
on the right hand. Now the reason for
that is because Sting
wanted the audience to feel that the
song is in four four, while actually, the
meter is in five four. So, your accents will fall on the one, two,
three, four, five, one, two, three, four, five,
one, two, three, four, five, one, two, three, four, five,
one, two, three, four, five, one, two, three,
four, five, one.

Okay? And then,
as the next step, in the next line you can see a dotted quarter note and
an eighth note bass drum, which is happening throughout
the whole song, okay? So that will be this. One,
two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five.
(drumming) So now you have the basic groove with the original bass
drum pattern happening, and the accent in the four four. Now we're going to start
adding the eighth notes, very quickly on the high hat.

One, two, three, four,
five, no accent so far. (drumming) One, two, three, four, five,
one, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five,
one, two, three, four, five. Now, the same thing with the
original bass drum pattern. (drumming) Your third chart will show the
accent in a four four feel, but played as an eighth note. One, two, three, four, five,
one, two, three, four, five. (drumming) Same thing with the
final bass drum pattern. (drumming) Okay, so now that we
have the main groove that Vinnie plays
throughout the song, with the accented eighth
notes in groups of four, sometimes he also
opens the high hat, or plays the accent on the bell.

What I'm going to
demonstrate now is what if you opened high
hat on the accented notes, and leave the following
eighth note out. So you would have the …
(drumming) But that's going to happen
over a five four groove, so altogether you have this.
One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five.
(drumming) The second line of
the same notation is the opposite version
of the high hat openings. It would be something like this. One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five. (drumming) So the next one. Check out
the fifth notation below. It's a shuffle beat
that Vinnie plays on the right bell occasionally, and some splashes, as a fill, sort of a build up
toward the choruses.

Now, the shuffle
beat would be this. One, a two, a three, a four,
if we were in four four. Right, because
we're in five four, the shuffle note's going to fall into completely
different places. This is pretty advanced,
so check this out. (drumming) And in your last clip today, we're going to start something that is an addition
to this groove. Well, we're going to play the shuffle beat on
the right cymbal bell. Keep the high hat happening
on the two and four. We should cross over the bar.

Let's say in the first bar it's
going to be a two and four. Second bar is going
to be one, three, and fifth quarter note, but the kick drum
pattern remains the same. So, at the end of the lesson, you're going to
have the right foot and the left hand
playing in five four. The left foot goes in four four. And the right hand plays
actually in three eight, which is the shuffle beat. Okay, so altogether

TRAKTOR DJ 2: Your First Mix | Native Instruments

Hey this is Eric from Native Instruments and in this video we are going to open TRAKTOR DJ 2 for the first time, check out the interface, and mix our first two tracks. When you start the app you will see the two decks here. In the center there's the mixer section and in this space above we will see visual representations of the tracks we are playing, called waveforms. We will take a closer look at all of this but the first thing we will need to do is to load a track into a deck. Tap the album art icon in a deck to bring up your track collection. This is where you'll see all the music you're able to play. The app comes with some tracks to get you started. Simply drag and drop one into the deck. You can see the track's loaded and the track's waveform is now shown here. Darker colors represent lower frequencies like kick drums and bass, while the lighter colors show higher frequencies like hi-hats.

The white lines represent the beat. So let's hit play to hear some music. You can shape the sound of what we hear using the mixer. Everything on the left side will affect the deck on the left, and everything on the right side will affect the deck on the right. These three knobs in the middle are the equalizer or EQ. They let you shape the sound by cutting or boosting either low, mid, or high frequencies of the track. So I could cut the kick or bass drum, or hi-hats depending on what frequencies of the track I want to mix with. To control these knobs I tap them and drag up or down to turn them to the right or to the left. A double-tap will reset them. I want to mix this with a new track and I could load any track from my collection But I could also look at which tracks TRAKTOR thinks would work well based on what's playing right now by just tapping this icon here. These tracks should all be easy to mix with what's playing. I'm just going to go with this one, and instead of dragging this time I can tap it to select, and then tap the deck to load it.

To mix the tracks gradually it's best to start with the volume fader for the second deck set to zero. Hit play, and bring the volume up to mix the tracks together. Alternatively, you can use to cross fader to raise the volume of the new track while decreasing the volume of the first. Double-tap to reset it. To finish off the mix, I can choose an effect like the reverb here. Open it up, and then slide the volume set of the first track to zero. Bam! This was your first mix! with old school hip-hop grooves when i talk   about old school hip-hop grooves i'm talking

and on and on see what i did there every group   that we're going to play today is all based 
off of sextuplets so if you don't know what a   sex tuplet is essentially all we're doing is we're 
fitting six notes per pulse so if my pulse is here   what i'm going to do is i'm going to fit six 
notes every time i clap here so we have this   one two three four five six one two 
three four five six one two three four   five six one two three four five six now the 
proper way or i wouldn't even say proper way   because there are many ways but the standard 
way of counting it is like this one triplet   answer play two triplet intro play three triplet 
intro play fortune play interplay once you're   playing enterprise two triplet and triplet three 
triplet and triplet fortune play and your blitz   again there are many ways of counting it

let's get back to it so now that you know how to   count the sextuplet now we can actually get 
to the examples in example one this is going   to be our main groove everything that we do 
from here on out is based off of this groove   so the right hand is going to be playing 
a shuffle so we have something like this   one triplet and triplet two triplet and 
triplet three triplet and triplet four triplet   and triplet the snare drum is going to be playing 
a backbeat on beats two and four and the bass drum   is going to be playing on the downbeat of one and 
on the end of three let's hear how this sounds example two is the same thing as example one the 
only thing is we're going to add an extra bass   drum but that exturbation will be on the third 
partial of beat three let's hear how this sounds in example three we're going to play the same 
groove that we played in example two however   now we're going to add some hi-hat openings the 
hi-hat openings are on the third partial and the   six partial of b2 one tip i do wanna give you is 
you're gonna use the tip of the stick that way it   sounds light and also be a little bit easier to 
actually open up the hi-hat and get a good crisp sound in example four we're going to play the 
same thing that we did in example three   however we're going to start it with a 
paradiddle so we're going to go right left   right right then the rest of it's the 
same however let me give you a quick tip   the left hand is going to go underneath the hi-hat 
do not go outside of the hi-hat because it's going   to take you a little bit longer to actually get 
back to the snare drum so just a quick tip make   sure you go underneath and you can actually 
slice it alright let's hear how this sounds in example five we're going to do the same exact 
thing that we did in example four however we're   going to add a paradiddle on the last four 
notes of the example let's check this out well here comes the most important part 
of this lesson and that is applying   these grooves to the actual music all the

MuseScore in Minutes: Lesson 7 – Tablature and Drum Notation

Welcome to MuseScore in Minutes A series of short videos that will quickly get
you up and running with MuseScore 2.0 I'm Dr. George Hess and in each of
these videos will look at how to use some of the basic functions of the
exciting new version of this program MuseScore is a free and open source
music notation program, that's a great alternative to Finale and Sibelius You can download it for free
at the website shown on the screen Lesson 7 – Tablature and Drum Notation We are going to use the lead sheet now,
to create a simple arrangement I have copied the music into a new score Next we’ll enter the notes for the guitar,
bass and drums in the 1st measure You can enter notes on either the standard staff
or the tab staff And since they are linked, they show up on both staves To enter notes in the tab staff, click the 1st measure Then enter the Note Input mode Choose the note value with the mouse
You can't use the shortcut here You are going to use the up and down arrow keys to move to the different strings We are going to move to the 5th string And then you type the fret number,
using the number keys To advance use the right arrow Now I'm doing this a little bit differently and notice that
I have only entered the notes on the 5th string Now I'm going to use the arrow keys
to move to the 6th string And then I'm going to place an E, an open note,
typing 0 on each downbeat Next I will enter the 8th notes in the bass,
using step entry Drum notation can be introduced using the keyboard
or the MIDI keyboard Select the drum staff, then enter Note Input mode You see the mapping of the drums
on the bottom of the screen We will enter a simple beat with hi-hat,
snare and kick drum In drum notation the hi-hat and the snare
will have the stems going up The base drum will have the stems going down MuseScore will handle this automatically We will enter the hi-hat first Enter Note Input mode and then select the 8th note You notice then in the drum map
that the hi-hat has been assigned the shortcut G So we can just type G and it will enter the note You can also type any key on the MIDI keyboard While the note is selected in the drum map,
and it will enter as well To add the snare drum,
use the left arrow key to move to beat 2 You’ll see down in the drum map,
that the shortcut for snare drum is A Hold the Shift key down and type A Then move to beat 4 and do the same thing Now for the kick drum You notice that the kick drum note is shown in green This means it will be entered in voice 2 Use the arrow key to move to beat one Type 5 for quarter note and then B Now type 4 to change that to an 8th rest and 0 Now type B again type 5 and then B one more time So now is our basic rhythm section parts entered,
we’re ready to create the rest of our arrangement

Roland V-Drums TD-07KV Kit Overview

Hi, I'm Pat from Roland and I want to show you the V-Drums TD-07KV. The TD-07KV is a compact drum kit perfect for home gaming, entertainment and honest practice. The V-Drums concept is based on the fact that inside the module there is a collection of virtual instruments and each one can be exchanged for another and tuned and adjusted according to your ideas, just like with acoustic drums. These instruments can be played via attached pads using authentic drum techniques. You don't have to change the game technique at all at V-Drums .

In this video, I'll walk you through everything the TD-07KV has to offer, show you what it can do, and explain key features. First we will look at the individual parts of the TD-07KV set. The V-Drum TD-07KV set consists of a drum stand with attached pads for drums and cymbals. At the beginning, it is good to mention that the TD-07KV set is not supplied with a drum chair, kick pedal or mallets. So you have to buy these items separately. These pads connect to the TD-07 module using a multi-pin connector cable on the module and a series of quarter-inch connectors that plug directly into the pads.

Let's start with the snare drum, this is an eight-inch PDX-8 with a mesh membrane. Roland introduced the reticulated membrane first and is significantly different from other available reticulated membranes. It features two layers of unique material designed to provide natural reflection and impact resistance. It also provides reliable and stable detection of your beats for reliable sound triggering and is also incredibly quiet. The PDX-8 pad also has two game zones. Thus, the membrane makes one sound and the edge triggers the sound of the edge associated with the instrument or a completely different sound. I have a steel snare here now. The membrane sounds like this. And the edge sounds like this. But when I switch to another sound that I prepared before, I can play the sound of a snare drum on the membrane, and choose a completely different sound for the edge. In this case, the bell. Now let's look at toms. We have three identical pads, all of which are six-inch PDX-6A models with a mesh membrane.

They have exactly the same reticulated membrane as a snare, they are only a few inches smaller. However, there is one difference, the toms have only one playing zone, so they make a sound only when hitting the membrane and not on the edge. It is important to know that the voltage of all Roland V-Drums can be adjusted. For acoustic sets, the voltage of each drum is set to a different pitch and tone. However, this creates a different response on the mallet, which is different for each drum. With V-Drums, the pitch varies in the module, but the response of each mesh pad can be easily adjusted by changing the tension with a standard wrench and tightening each screw sequentially, as with acoustic drums. This means that you can have the snare more tense than the first tom and the more tense than the second tom.

And the third is a bit looser. It is again exactly the same as with acoustic drums. The kick in this set represents the KD-10. This is a kick with a textile membrane attached to this unit. Any kick pedal attaches directly to the pad. The KD-10 is stable and offers a realistic response from a much larger bass drum. And it's quiet because it can absorb energy from the impact of a hammer. Now let's look at cymbals. Hi-hats are 10-inch CY-5 cymbals. Hi-hats are unique in that they are two cymbals perched together that can be opened and closed at different intervals for different sounds. Hi-hats are controlled using a pedal, and when I lift my foot on the pedal and play the cymbal, the sound of the hi- hat will gradually change from closed to open. Crash and ride cymbals are 12-inch CY-8 cymbals with different sounds on the edge and on the body of the cymbals.

They are attached to the stand so that they sway during play , thus providing a more natural response. All these pads, except for the kick, which stands alone, are mounted on a compact drum stand. The pipes are made of steel, so they are strong and durable, thanks to the clamps they hold everything in place, they have great strength, so nothing slips out of them and they are also very robust, so you wo n't just damage them. The stand itself has a flexible but compact layout, so you can put everyone and cymbals where you want them, and this layout looks familiar and natural. Now let's look at the TD-07 module itself.

Inside the TD-07 module I have 50 drum kits. Twenty-five of them are preset and twenty-five are custom, it's your space to experiment and build your own kits from the ground up. With the ability to easily change and edit tools within any preset kit. If you want to exchange a snare for another in a preset kit, it's a toy. In the TD-07 module we have 143 instruments, across snare drums, kicks, drums, toms, cymbals, percussion and electronic sounds. Each of them can be adjusted and customized, as I will show you in a moment. It's actually like having your own library of drums and you can use any of them to create kits that are completely unique. Let's see what exactly you can adjust for sounds or instruments with the TD-07 module. As I mentioned, you can easily exchange one tool for another in any kit. And thanks to the membrane and edge function of the snare drum, you can assign different sounds to each zone . However, there is also the option to actually customize each sound using the V-Edit function. Take a kick, for example. Once I choose the sound I want, I can adjust the pitch.

I can add damping. And I can also use an equalizer and need to add bass. I can also use transitional adjustments, so you can add or subtract an attack for a softer or harder sound. Or I can shorten the decay. The TD-07 also offers multi-effects. There are 30 different types and each of them can be assigned to a tool within the kit. For example , I added Reverb to this . Or Distortion. Tape Echo. Or maybe Flanger, just to give you an idea. Another great feature for editing your own sound in the TD-07 is the ability to change the environment. This basically means that you will hear the selected set as if it were in a specific environment , such as a stadium or studio, or you will hear more sound in the space next to the drum set itself. The TD-07 has built-in Bluetooth. There are a few things you can do about it. First, you can connect another Bluetooth device and send audio from it to the TD-07 module.

So you can play audio from your music library or streaming services and play along with the song and hear both the drums and the song in your headphones. You can also watch videos on your device and listen to audio through headphones, which is great for video tutorials. Once the device is paired, all you have to do is turn on Bluetooth and that's it. You can also send MIDI data via Bluetooth, so you can wirelessly record your performance to your DAW and then play your sounds via VST software. If you are specifically interested in running software tools in real time using the TD-07KV, thanks to the ultra-fast startup and low latency of the module itself, the TD-07KV is the perfect companion for such gaming.

In terms of connectivity, the TD-07 module has a USB type B output. This allows you to connect a USB cable to a computer for stereo audio and MIDI transfer via USB. This makes it easy to record drums in your DAW. The TD-07KV also has a stereo input with a mini jack for transmitting external audio to the module via cable and a mini headphone output. The last feature I will introduce is the Coach learning feature. This is a tool to help you really improve your drumming. The module is equipped with a metronome , where you can change the tempo and also change the value of notes and the number of beats per bar, so you can play with different beat foreshadowing.

You can practice with the same metronome in Coach Mode, which offers Time Chech, Quiet Count and Warm-Up functions. Time Check measures how accurate your timing is after a few bars and indicates on the screen whether you hit exactly, are you behind, or ahead. Quiet Count tests how well you keep up the pace, as it misses clicks for one measure. Warm-Up mode is great for warming up your muscles, synchronizing with a metronome, and rehearsing a variety of simple drum patterns before you practice, before a lesson, before you play music, or even before a performance.

We can receive the fan's stories. And sing them a song

matching the concept. [Hui] Exactly, it would be
so much fun. So I would be the singer

the djembe now. [Shinwon] I was thinking that since there will be
a lot of episodes we could do episodes as
our separate units. [Hui] Oh units.

an old school hiphop beat. We'll receive the rhyming
lyrics from the fans. Then we'll make
a flow with the beat and we'll create an entire
completed song. Seems like it would be fun. Sounds good. [Shinwon] How about you Kino? [Kino] I'd like to do something
that I can be good at. Maybe consulting or something
to do with communication.

Art of drumming – EYE OPENING ways 3 amazing producers make their drums

i'm going to attempt to demystify the drum techniques of three of the most influential producers in electronic music burial boris creature and solomon [Music] welcome to the art of drumming [Music] we will run the clocks backwards we are in 2007 the world was taken by storm by iphone and back in uk another storm was happening created by untrue album of burial the drums were especially loose and organic and patterns were reminders of old jungle and garage beats the funny thing is burial actually use sound forge for creating this album sound forge is not a daw and it's mostly used for sample editing which was probably divided drums were so loose because there were no real quantization so to emulate this in ableton the first thing that we are going to do right click and deactivate the fixed rate burial also states that he didn't know how to use sequencer so we will not use any drum kits everything will be us editing the audio we will start with the kick burial again says that he is aiming for that fishbone with the kicks means that at the beginning of the sample you will see that initial thump and then you will see a tail with the sub so let's start with sampling things around i think this will work for the kick we will turn the warp off all the time when we turn this down the length of the sample will also extend but this is like the thumb of the fishbone so we need something under it to sustain the sub base burial says that he sampled out of the sounds from playstation games i'm gonna go one of my favorites silent hill found this so we have this turn this down so more sub envelope on the pitch so that we can have ryu of course we need a bit eq and now we need to put a bit volume automation to make them pass more into each other and a bit limiting on the first one together now we are still missing that initial temp that we always had let's grab a stick sample from our recorded samples i actually grabbed two this the first one and the second one and now first thing is this snare hit that we always set a pum [Music] let's tune this down send it to the reverb and the burial track is like so it's somewhere in here right i'm a little bit off the grid i don't care you just need to put it the place that you like leave it there there are also back snares in burials track so let's do that grab another sample now i have these different hits i like this dentent so there's two different tones there is perfect so it's let's get that tom dum dun dun dub again from hits this sound turn it down sounded like a tom let's cut this super highs dirty low thumb it's like we start to feel the groove and now we need this weird shakery sound for that i'm going to go to my favorite silent hill game silent hill 4 room let's record that elder sample material same idea chop chop pieces again nothing is really on the grid together okay let's sample that snail with another silent here gunshots on it passes really nice as an ambient sound for the snare together the other thing that burial says he used that ambient sounds just to cover up the lameness of his tunes but it basically kind of acting as a glue between these different ambient sounds this sitting noise but we are lacking the crackle you can actually use the vinyl distortion in ableton to add the crackle and see how this actually glues everything together we need this kind of low-fi sound in our drums i'm going to grip the percussions and add a vinyl distortion from isotope going to the master and adding a pre-amp now the final step is sanding a bit to the reverb altogether so that we can glue everything and if you add the burial box on top of this [Music] almost half of the people who are watching these videos haven't subscribed to channel yet if you're enjoying the video please kicks and head of things in the track is such a into this kick every time when kick is coming the bass line is going down so the kick and the bass line fits much more together and have like a bigger impact and actually i do it on a lot of channels for drums i do it for shakers i do it sometimes also for pets giving like a good vibration and the second thing is groovy percussions and hats everything is really quantized is but you can do ctrl u and then you can actually move things around a little bit or you can actually also apply a groove afterwards let's say we were going to apply this like the boris likes it to make it even more interesting i'm going to make it polymetric so pick a three quadro of the loop ctrl j and then we're going to loop this his snares and claps always has these extra hits to keep the energy levels up all the time let's put a club first we are making it stereo with eco using house effect but both spreadsheet has this extras right and left all the time things like this now we have two more claps they sound differently the first one pan to the left the other one longer more ambient pan to the right complementing this keeping it really energetic while we are talking about the energy levels another trick that boris does is using white noise to excite the track so everything is turned off the other thing is the noise the main trick is taking this velocity and putting on the cutoff attack and decay so when you increase in velocity it will increase the length and open the cutoff you see that i'm increasing the velocity here so longer brighter shorter darker if you do this in the track it will kind of excite the track now we have to complement this with the hi-hats and the shakers let's put the hats first because we have held off elements in the mid-highs these high hats are really bright and again of course we are using groove pool to make it slightly off beat and now that means we can also use a bit slightly darker shakers without thinking too much about the mixing part much darker compared to the hat and all together we are really building this energy and on top of this there are some organic percussions bridge actually uses a lot of white noise risers here again i have my serum patch no slaters but on the white noise and on the effects side we have a bit coarser and river to make it a bit more ambient and we see the cuddle filter opening up here there is automation and there's a shake and that comes basically from having lfo2 onto level and final piece is actually a very boiler spreader thing and so using return noise to keep everything more like a warehouse feel so i have this return channel so if you start sending things here it will create this washi sound an important thing here of course sachin in this noise of the kick so that we hear this breathing sound so i'm not gonna go in and use compression because belly breaker says that he doesn't do it as a compressor [Music] but what i'm going to do create a parallel chain which i think he does quite a bit so i had this return channel for parallel processing here we have overdrive reverb eq and more drive we assign our drums here so this channel injects a lot of distortion and splash into the original drums so without this one and with it and all together now we are going to replicate the drums of king of the dance lord solomon [Music] as we are on the dance floor we start with the cake for the floor in this case i will also add the base because base is really important for making people dance first we have the sub bass really straight forward and on top of that color base of course we wanted a bit groovier so we'll have a plucky base on top of this and we have this plucky base from hive the first thing is the clap just to give us the tempo but we need the organic collapse for this using different claps to make it even more organicy pan quiet to the right and then the same clap but pan to the left together so we have this beautiful stereo clap sound so we will have one more clap on top of this so if we duplicate this and take this off and this one also in the middle so it creates this really interesting contrast you can actually move this clap around a little bit to give a bit more lagging feel it there's cool trick there but more important than that solomon has this signature toms or organic drums or hand drums found this bongo sample [Music] of course this is not something we can dance quite a bit so we have to chop this around [Music] and here we still follow this slightly off-grid to give a bit more groovy feel together now [Music] with the solomon you will see that there are a lot of attacks out of chops from this congo bongo whatever tom sound that he is using so i found couple of more bonga loops the first one this and here we have another field and then another one here another here and together as we have all those things going on the percussive side the high end tends to be a bit more simpler for the solomon tracks basic hi-hat and a really close hat on top of that deviating slightly from the off beat side and nice shaky loop under it together [Music] and on top of this you will find some random ambient hits to make everything a bit more glued all together with nice ambient reverb together and of course we have to send all these percussions and drums to the reverb make them sit in the same room indeed i have two rooms here one is bigger that i'm sending claps and so on the second one is for the bongos to put them inside the same room and hats they come together
